<image:caption>From the tumultuous days of revolution and merger with Tanganyika in 1964, Zanzibar has evolved into a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania with a distinct cultural identity and a growing economy primarily driven by tourism, agriculture, and spice exports. Over the years, Zanzibar has witnessed political stability, investments in infrastructure, and a focus on sustainable development. It remains a popular destination for visitors seeking idyllic beaches, historic Stone Town's UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a glimpse into the vibrant Swahili culture. Despite facing socio-economic challenges, Zanzibar's journey from post-colonial upheaval to its present state showcases resilience, a commitment to preserving its unique heritage, and a promising future on the global stage.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The practice of women picking seaweed in Zanzibar has been a significant part of the region's cultural and economic landscape for decades. These women, often referred to as "seaweed farmers," venture into the shallow waters of the Indian Ocean during low tide to collect seaweed for various purposes, primarily for the production of cosmetics, medicines, and food additives. Seaweed farming provides employment opportunities and income for many local women, contributing to their economic empowerment and the overall socio-economic stability of their communities. This sustainable and environmentally friendly industry has garnered attention for its role in supporting the livelihoods of Zanzibar's coastal communities, while also showcasing the resilience and resourcefulness of the women who engage in this traditional practice.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The specific timing for seaweed harvesting in Zanzibar varies depending on the tides and local conditions, but it typically involves early morning activities. Seaweed farmers often head to the shallow waters during low tide, which can occur in the early morning or late afternoon, depending on the location and time of year. They time their activities to coincide with low tide because it makes it easier to access the seaweed beds, which are exposed during this period. Additionally, the water tends to be calmer during low tide, making it safer and more efficient for seaweed harvesting. So, it's not uncommon for these women to start their work early in the morning to take advantage of the favorable low tide conditions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Conflict and Displacement in DRC: Nearly two decades of armed conflict in the DRC have displaced over 3 million Congolese refugees and internally-displaced persons (IDPs). Over 40 armed groups, including the national army, act as pseudo-governing bodies in the areas they control in eastern DRC and fuel the continuation of conflict, mass displacement and targeted violence against women and girls. In 2012 alone, 2.3 million people were displaced within DRC and over 70,000 Congolese fled across the border into Rwanda and Uganda.2 The proliferation of armed groups and others perpetrating sexual violence, the splintering of families and communities through chronic displacement, and the break-down of the social fabric contribute to increased risks for Congolese refugee women and girls. These risks persist during flight and in cities and camps where women and girls seek refuge both in DRC and neighboring countries.</image:caption>

<image:caption>worked a 13-acre farm in Bhutan. They grew corn, wheat, buckwheat and rice. The children were all very young when they were forced migrate to the refugee camp. The army held Kapil for 8 hours, leaving him with the understanding that if he and his family were to forgo Hinduism, stop speaking Nepali, and were to dress like the northerners, he could stay. Otherwise, threats would continue. Kapil would have been tortured, but he was a friend of a police officer, who released him. The family registered in the refugee camp in June of 1992. He was able to work illegally as a mason outside the refugee camp. On one job, he worked for 6 months, for which his employer refused to pay him. The refugee camp did not really supply enough food to keep his children healthy. With his work, Kapil could earn money for meat and vegetables. During the rainy season their bamboo home with its thatched roof would blow away, so they would have to rebuild it. In 2008, there was a big fire in the camp that burned their home as well as those of their neighbors. Fire spread rapidly among these bamboo huts. Within half an hour all the homes they could see were burned. Their documents and money were destroyed when their hut went up in flames. They lost a bicycle too that they used to go into town for supplies. In October 2014, the family were resettled to the US. Kapil and his family are happy to be in Columbus, where his children are working steadily.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Dadaab refugee complex has a population of 218,873 registered refugees and asylum seekers as at the end of July 2020. Dadaab refugee complex consists of three camps. The three Dadaab camps are Dagahaley, Ifo and Hagadera. The first two are located in Lagdera (Dadaab) district while Hagadera is located in the neighboring Fafi district. A large part of the residents in the old camps (Ifo, Dagahaley, Hagadera) arrived in Dadaab in the 1990s and have children and grandchildren born in the camps. The camps resemble naturally-grown towns and have developed into commercial hubs connecting north-eastern Kenya and southern Somalia. During the Horn of Africa famine in 2011, two camps, Ifo 2 and Kambioos were established to cater of the influx. These two camps have, however, been closed with the reduction of the numbers in Dadaab as a result of the voluntary return program.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Follow the co-founders of the Soomal House of Art in Minneapolis, who are themselves working visual artists, as they run a community-based gallery. Together, they uplift Somali art and inspire a new generation to explore its cultural heritage. Silsilad (Sequence) is a short film centered around three Somali-American artists – Khadijah Muse, Mohamud Mumin, and Kaamil A. Haider – who are the co-founders of the Soomaal House of Art, an artist collective and contemporary art gallery based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The film explores the role of visual art as a tool for self-expression, investigation, and celebration within a newly arrived immigrant community. Despite the overwhelming challenges these artists face, including a lack of funding and engagement in the broader art community, Silsilad chronicles their triumphs in engaging their local community and raising cultural consciousness about the talents and contributions of Somali artists. <image:caption>Senegal gained independence from France in 1960, marking the beginning of its journey as a sovereign nation under its first president, Léopold Sédar Senghor. Unlike many other African countries that experienced post-colonial turmoil, Senegal has maintained relative political stability, with peaceful transfers of power and a strong democratic tradition. This stability has allowed the country to focus on economic and social development, though challenges remain, including poverty reduction and environmental sustainability. Climate change poses a significant threat to Senegal, with rising sea levels, desertification, and coastal erosion affecting agriculture and fisheries—two key sectors of the economy. Many Senegalese have migrated abroad in search of better opportunities, forming a strong diaspora that contributes to the economy through remittances. Despite economic hardships, Senegal has made strides in reducing poverty through government initiatives, foreign investment, and the promotion of sectors like tourism, technology, and renewable energy. The country's resilience, cultural richness, and commitment to development continue to shape its progress toward a more sustainable and prosperous future.</image:caption>
